How It Works

Understanding Energy Choice

Energy deregulation gives eligible customers the ability to choose who supplies the energy they use while their local utility continues to deliver that energy to their home or business.

What is “energy deregulation” & “energy choice”?

Great question! Your energy bill already includes two separate parts and two charges — one for the energy you use and another for getting that energy delivered to your home.

Your Energy Bill Has Two Parts

Understanding the difference makes energy choice much easier.

01

Energy Used In Your Home Supply / Consumption Charge

The first charge is the supply charge, sometimes referred to as consumption. This is the cost of the electricity and/or natural gas you actually use.

Your cost is based on your rate per kilowatt hour for electricity or therm for natural gas, multiplied by the amount of energy you use.

The more energy you use, the higher this portion of your bill can be. The company supplying your energy will appear on this part of your bill.

02

Getting Energy Into Your Home Delivery / Distribution Charge

The second charge is the delivery or distribution charge. This covers the cost of getting the energy supply to your home or business.

Your local utility is responsible for delivering the energy through the existing infrastructure and handling this portion of your bill.

Choosing an energy supplier does not change who delivers the energy.

⚡

One Bill. Two Charges.

Switching energy suppliers does not mean receiving another bill. You continue to receive your utility bill and make your payment directly to your utility. The supply portion of the bill is handled between the utility and your selected energy supplier.

Energy Supply The supplier you choose provides the energy supply portion of your bill.
Energy Delivery Your local utility continues to deliver the energy to your home or business.

In Summary

You already pay for both the supply and delivery of your energy. With HNVista, you can choose an eligible energy supplier for the supply portion while your local utility continues handling delivery.

Your Utility Still Has Your Back

Your local utility remains responsible for emergencies, maintaining the delivery infrastructure, servicing your utility account and handling equipment-related matters. Choosing HNVista as your energy supplier does not change those responsibilities.
